Crude extracts of Acanthopanax senticosus (A. senticosus) have been used as galenicals. In this study we carried out a series of experiments to examine cardiovascular activities of crude extracts from A. senticosus. Whereas the extracts had no effect on the apoptosis of bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs), the extracts appeared to induce endothelial cell proliferation. In addition, endothelial cell migration was shown to be enhanced by the crude extracts, indicating that A. senticosus extracts likely act as an angiogenic factor. We also examined effects of A. senticosus extracts on nitric oxide (NO) production, leukocytic adhesion to endothelium, and homotypic aggregation of leukocytes. Both the NO production and the leukocytic adhesion to endothelial cells were revealed to be increased by treatment with A. senticosus extracts, but the homotypic aggregation of leukocytes was inhibited. Together, multiple roles of A. senticosus extracts in the cardiovascular system provide an insight on their broad applications as galenicals to treat cardiovascular diseases.
